Discover the natural beauty of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges on foot. Explore the diverse and striking landscape of Adnyamathanha Country from one of many walking trails surrounding Wilpnea Pound Resort.
Travellers seeking a more leisurely pace can head west along Wilpena Creek to the much-photographed Cazneaux Tree, or wend their way towards Hills Homestead, venturing off to the Wangarra Lookouts for spectacular views across the landscape. And of course, there’s the walk to Old Wilpena Station, a must-do for an inspiring dose of history and native scenery.
For adventure lovers, take the full day hike towards St Mary Peak, the highest point in the Flinders Ranges. Climb the rocky inclines to the stunning Mount Ohlssen Bagge, or observe the adaptive nature of the region’s bushland on Drought Busters Hike. Edeowie Gorge is another gem to discover, especially following rain when the waterfalls are flowing.

St Mary Peak is central to the Adnyamathanha creation story. The Adnyamathaha people of the Flinders Ranges ask that visitors respect their culture and the heritage of the area by not ascending the summit of the peak.
If you’re planning to go bush walking, please let a responsible person know your route and your expected return time. Mobile phone coverage is not reliable in the National Park, particularly in remote areas and where the terrain is steep.
Learn about the history of the region and the challenges faced by the Hills family settlers at the turn of the century along a leisurely walk along Wilpena Creek into Wilpena Pound and on to the Old Hills Homestead. An optional hike up to the Wangarra Hill lookout offers panoramic views of Wilpena Pound. Take in the beauty of the great river red gums as you enjoy cake and coffee near the Homestead. Easy walking. 2 hours approximately, 2.5 kms return.
